5th Anniversary Championship 10 Round Fight: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne vs. Suikoden II

  After a slight delay, it's finally time to crown a 5th anniversary champion. These two RPG heavyweights are some of the genre's most renowned titles of all time, so this is going to be a knockdown, drag out slugfest. As it stands, they defeated some stiff competition to get here, and both titles are absolutely deserving. Both scored 9.75s and were strongly considered for 10s. Hey, one or both might get bumped up after this battle. I'm sure many people already consider them 10s, which is going to make said battle tough to decide. This isn't like the comparison I did with Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars, with all due respect to those two titles the ones we are comparing today have had time to marinate. The book on them is written, as written as the book on a game can be, and history has already decided them to be great.   I always find it interesting to look back on how some of these game series ended up on my radar. It's true of any media really, hell, any "thing" at all. You hear about something through word of mouth or see it in a store or experience it because someone else is super into it and boom, all the sudden it's part of your universe.   I don't play a whole lot of modern games, they generally don't interest me. But every once in a while, something new catches my eye. I do occasionally review newer games, but it's usually because they fall into my lap rather than because I seek them out. Typically, the ones that I do play are from the 7th gen. I guess I should back up and talk about what I consider modern. To me, anything from the 7th gen on is considered modern. The PS3, 360 and Wii kind of start what I consider the modern era.   It's time to talk about PS1 RPG number 3,252-5C. Okay, there aren't THAT many of them, though sometimes it feels like it. It really is amazing to think about how popular RPGs, especially JRPGs, were during the late 90's and early 00's. I miss those days, I really do. Of course, there was plenty of love for RPGs in other sub-genres as well, especially strategy RPGs. Final Fantasy Tactics was the catalyst for the genre's mainstream popularity in the west, but it was far from the only one. I've already reviewed a handful of strategy RPGs, including Shining Force, Front Mission 3 and Saiyuki: Journey West. It's not my favorite genre, but it's definitely up there and it may be the genre I like the most but know the least about. Initial Thoughts on Chained Echoes

I don't normally do stuff like this, but it's not often I see so much hype around a game like Chained Echoes. I really like to try and finish games before I say anything about them, but my ex-journalist brain keeps yelling at me that "TIMELINESS IS IMPORTANT" and there is no way I am going to finish this game any time soon. So, I want to strike while the iron is hot and give some initial thoughts on Chained Echoes. For those who are unaware, Chained Echoes is an independently developed, old school style JRPG available on just about every modern gaming device. It was developed over the course of seven years by a single developer. Yes, you heard that right, one developer. From all accounts, developer Matthias Linda was a huge fan of 4th gen RPGs and wanted to create a game similar to iconic titles like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy VI. Suikoden II: Part 2

  Last week, I discussed Suikoden II's gameplay, which was positive pretty much across the board. This week it's on to the story which...is also pretty awesome. Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few aspects of the plot I think could have been better. In a lot of ways, I feel like they missed a lot of opportunities to really drive home their point about the ravages of war and how it causes otherwise good people to do bad things. But Suikoden II still told an epic story that's among the best I've experienced in an RPG. I gave a bit of background on the plot last week, which sees our unnamed hero and his best friend Jowy on the run from their former colleagues in the Highland Army. The duo have just witnessed the death of their entire unit, killed as part of a false flag operation to prolong the kingdom's war with the neighboring City-State of Jowston. After fleeing their pursuers, the duo is separated, with the hero washing up alongside a rushing river. There,
